deadCENTER 2013

After attending 3 out of the 5 days that the deadCENTER Film Festival was bringing some of the best in Oklahoma filmmaking together across the better portion of Oklahoma City, I left with an even greater respect for the art and a better understanding of how great Oklahoma is for filmmaking.

Even after seeing a great documentary on The Rolling Stones and a couple of funny run-ins with The Flaming Lips’ Wayne Coyne, the best experience was easily the showing of Okie Shorts. This was an hour and a half collection of short films created by Oklahomans. I was immediately blown away by the quality of these productions and the work put in to them. While watching them, one could easily forgot he is sitting in the Bricktown Harkins theatre and feel as those he is at an acclaimed festival like Sundance or Cannes.

“There’s a great community of filmmakers here,” answered one director after being asked what is best about making movies in Oklahoma. The sentiment was repeated down the line of the Q and A session.

About deadCENTER: “deadCENTER Film Festival is Oklahoma’s largest film festival for the past 13 years and one of the “Top 20 Coolest Film Festivals in the World” according to MovieMaker magazine. This year’s festival is June 5-9 and includes 119 comedies, dramas, hard-hitting documentaries and short films from Oklahoma and around the world.
