Press Play: Hinds

todayJanuary 20, 2016

Rock group Hinds blends sounds of garage rock and pop for their well received debut album, Leave Me Alone, which became available on January 8th. A big part of this album’s success is due to the Spanish quartets extensive, worldwide touring in which they often found themselves headlining shows and festivals.

In the Fall of 2015, Hinds embarked on a North American tour where they hit virtually all areas of the United States. Beginning January 2016, they traveled back to their native Europe for shows in dozens of countries. The group shows no signs of slowing down. When the European tour wraps up in February, they’re heading straight back to the States for more tour dates and a show at the prestigious SXSW Music Festival, which takes places in Austin, TX, March 15th-20th.

Hinds, who formed back in 2011 under the name Deers, says contemporary acts like the Black Lips, The Strokes and Ty Segall have influenced them over the years. Comparisons have also been drawn to the 1960s group, the Velvet Underground. The group uses these garage rock and pop influences to create a crude, yet fun and exuberant first album. Leave Me Alone features twelve lo-fi tracks that serve as an excellent introduction to a band that has a chance to impact college radio for some time.

The opening track on Leave Me Alone, “Garden”, sets the tone for the record. All songs on the album have a fairly smooth, pop sound, while also having the necessary sound imperfections associated with the garage rock music scene. Adding to their distinctiveness are the thick Spanish accents that their lead singers boast. While they have not redefined their musical genre of garage rock, which has become extremely popular of late, Hinds’ music is a fresh mix of various alternative rock genres. This fresh sound is one that will always be welcome in college radio. In addition to “Garden”, RSU Radio is airing a few other tracks from Hinds’ debut album, Leave Me Alone.
