Press Play: boygenius

todayDecember 14, 2018

Tired of being lumped into the catch-all category of alternative women, Julien Baker, Phoebe Bridgers, and Lucy Dacus combined their musical powers to create boygenius: the name of their super-group and first EP.  Each woman stays true to her musical style, while complimenting each other’s differences.

As much as this record sounds like swapping secrets with lifelong friends, Baker, Dacus, and Bridgers only met when they began playing shows and creating music together.  It all started when Bridgers and Dacus found themselves being compared to Baker, more for the fact that they’re women than any stylistic similarities.  The girls swapped long emails, opened for one another, and decided to get a band together.  As boygenius, Dacus, Bridgers, and Baker have been touring and cultivating a strong bond.

It’s been a busy year for Dacus, releasing her second solo album, Historian.  She brings her indie-rock background to the super-group’s sound. Baker released an album full of piano ballads, Turn Out the Lights in 2017.   Most recently, she lent her soft voice to a Manchester Orchestra track, “Bad Things to Good People.” Phoebe Bridgers is the folk-rock representative of the group, with a voice that can feel classically country at times.  Her sound is best explored on 2017 release, Stranger in the Alps.

The record is equal parts whisper and scream.  There’s something so intimate about the combination of the women’s voices and their words.  Guitars and piano fittingly underscore the personal moments each artist shares.  They challenge each other to experiment as well: Baker delivers a killer guitar solo, Dacus lets out a scream, Bridgers’ notes soar to new heights.  While maintaining their own personal strengths, the musicians compliment the best of each other’s works.
